Dropping by 9 percent from the year 2007, fatal accidents for pedestrians and cyclists seem to be on a decline in the state. However, says the "skimping on Sidewalks" report, the goel set by Governor Christie Whitman in 1998-a fifty percent improvement by 2010 is far away from being realized.


Although there are various state programs bent on dealing with the problem, the money grants are not coming through.


"In the next reauthorization of the Transportation Trust Fund, there should be an increase in funding for bikeways and safe routes to school," said Zoe Baldwin, Tri-Stae Transportation Campaign New Jersey coordinator.
