am asked this question often by customers, especially those who buy in
bulk to distribute at an event, and are seeking to maximize every
dollar. </span></div>
<div class="yiv7819709190MsoNormal" id="yui_3_16_0_1_1468514592572_117864">

buy Made in USA Reflexite/Orafol® or 3M® reflective belts? We can
get similar looking belts for far cheaper from China or Korea.” </span></div>
<div class="yiv7819709190MsoNormal" id="yui_3_16_0_1_1468514592572_117869">
<span id="yui_3_16_0_1_1468514592572_117868" style="font-family: "Calibri", sans-serif; font-size: 11.0pt;">I
ask in return, “Are you interested in a promo giveaway or in a safety
item? If you want a promo, then take the Chinese material. It’s cheaper –
in price and in quality. You’ll get your logo out to more people, for
sure. But if you care to keep people safe, and especially if your
organization is one that represents safety, such as a PD, FD, or EMS,
then PLEASE make the prudent choice, and opt for the brand-name, made in
USA belts. Simply put, dare to compare. We’ve done, and continue to
do, our own extensive field testing, as have many other recognized third
parties (ANSI is one such organization). The Reflexite USA belts are by
far the brightest, with 3M coming in as a close runner-up. They can
often be seen from blocks away, and those are the ubiquitous Bright
Ideas™ belts you see so often and from such a distance around Lakewood.
That extra few hundred feet of vision can make all the difference
between a motorist avoiding or colliding with a pedestrian or bicyclist.
The motorist has those few precious seconds to steer away or brake.
Considering that so many pedestrians and bicyclists in our town are
dark-clothed, and many roads are poorly lit, do not contain sidewalks,
and are not straight, it is all that more crucial to grant our citizens
the greatest chance. Obviously, you care about their safety. That’s why
chose to hand out reflective belts in the first place. If so, please
give them the best shot at it. </span></div>
<div class="yiv7819709190MsoNormal" id="yui_3_16_0_1_1468514592572_117873">
<span id="yui_3_16_0_1_1468514592572_117872" style="font-family: "Calibri", sans-serif; font-size: 11.0pt;">Another
several pointers: The USA made material is more durable, meaning it
will last longer. That’s more for your money. In addition, it is
engineered to reflect even when wet, such as in the rain or snow. Those
are times when visibility is reduced and braking time is prolonged! And
lastly, when a pedestrian or bicyclist dons a reflective belt, they
assume they are now visible. It is a disservice at the least, and
dangerous at the most, if the belt you give them does not own up.”</span></div>

local students. These backpacks were purchased from DontGetHit.com through a
grant from State Farm and feature reflectors on the back, sides, and straps,
allowing wearers to be seen from 360 degrees. Reflectors can quadruple the
distance at which pedestrians can be spotted by car drivers. Because backpacks
are worn almost daily, there is no need to put on any special gear or remind
children to use it, making this a smart safety item. In addition, backpacks are
items that many working-class parents in the Excelsior neighborhood have
trouble affording; therefore, this project was able to address both educational

When buying a rear taillight an important feature to look for is that the light can be adjusted vertically. Many taillights beams are directed downwards, making them much less visible to drivers.<br />

Depending on where you live you may be doing your morning commute to school or work in the dark at this time. Especially now in Oct. before the clock is set back, morning visibility is extremely important. A customer and friend of mine from Indiana is school bus driver. He many times has to pick up children when it is still dark. He gives out <a href="http://www.dontgethit.com/slapbracelets.html" target="_blank">reflective slap</a><a href="http://www.dontgethit.com/slapbracelets.html" target="_blank"> bracelets</a> and reflectors to stick on to mail boxes so that he can see the students and their stop.<br />
<br />
Here is a graph that he made (for his area).<br />

He has been involved in a number of Federal Highway Administration and state level bicycle and pedestrian research projects.<br />
<br />
Lessons Learned:<br />
In Bicycle/Motor Vehicle collisions where the motorist is "at fault":<br />
1. 87% of the collisions occur at intersections, including driveways and parking lots.<br />
2. In 95% of the collisions the bicycle was hit on the side. The bicycle was rear ended by a motor vehicle in only 5% of the collisions*.<br />
<br />
Conclusion: Bicycle lights need to be designed more to prevent side collisions instead of head on or rear end collisions, especially at intersections, where being seen at a 30-60 degree angle at a distance of 50-300 ft is far more important than at a distance of 600ft(or more), either directly ahead or directly behind, which is the current design criteria**.<br />
<br />
Steve Scott<br />
<br />
See the complete analysis at: http://www.bicyclinglife.com/Library/TaleOfThree.htm<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
*The figures of 87% for intersection collisions and 95% for side collisions are computed by Steve Scott from the study data and are not part of the original study by Wayne Pein.:<br />
<br />
**Current Florida law requires bicycle lights to be "visible" from 600ft behind and 500ft ahead. 600ft = two football fields or a little more than .1 mile(528ft).<br />

A lot has been going on. We are busy working on getting our products for sale on Amazon. We've also added many <a href="http://www.dontgethit.com/led-beetle-light.html" target="_blank">new great safety products</a> to our site DontGetHit.com.<br />
We are now getting ready for a local Child Health and Safety Fair this Sunday (which we do every year) and preparing for the first time to have a booth by the <a href="http://www.police-security.com/" target="_blank">Police Security Expo in Atlantic City</a>. <br />
<br />
One of our great new products are <a href="http://www.dontgethit.com/led-beetle-light.html" target="_blank">Beetle Lights</a>, now being sold in 5 amazing colors: Red, White, Blue, Yellow and Green. In the past we've only sold these fantastic universal silicone lights in red, white and blue. We've now added yellow and green LED colors to make all of
our outdoor runners, bikers etc. really visible with multi-color lights.<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhx9WQeD3OAUXI5ULjp31tHE_P3Y6hiD4-IfIBJSO-rZreQF0N-gsWUIA6Zarvtxt6RTUOvMggEfSRPjPrNSLQP7Ehb2oNp2U__aVKsP2qicL2jIGmG_sj3CRouCDZYJIQdRT218Q/s1600/118.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="2 LED silicone lights." border="0" height="150" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhx9WQeD3OAUXI5ULjp31tHE_P3Y6hiD4-IfIBJSO-rZreQF0N-gsWUIA6Zarvtxt6RTUOvMggEfSRPjPrNSLQP7Ehb2oNp2U__aVKsP2qicL2jIGmG_sj3CRouCDZYJIQdRT218Q/s200/118.jpg" title="2 LED silicone lights." width="200" /></a>It is has come to our attention thanks to our wonderful customers feedback that many states have a law in place for bikers not to use blue lights. This is to insure that regular cyclists should not be confused with law enforcement.<br />
<span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1371488001_1">Here is a link (provided by a customer in CA) to the CA state motor vehicle's law on blue lights for bicycles: </span><br /><span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1371488001_1"></span><br />

<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
Another neat product for runners are <a href="http://www.dontgethit.com/led-knuckle-lights.html" target="_blank">LED Knuckle lights </a>. These innovative lights fit comfortably on your hand with no need to adjust the beam, as it will move along with you as you run.<br />
<br />
If you happen to be by the Police Security Expo, please drop by and say hello. <br />

Nighttime Walking</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Now that the warm nights are upon us, folks are looking
forward to - Getting Out There and Walking - Getting Back into Shape. But be
careful! There are protective measures that need to addressed, like proper
nighttime clothing, appropriate reflective gear, and heeding road safety
guidelines.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Nighttime walking requires extra protective measures that
some pedestrians don’t realize. For example, when crossing the street at night,
don’t assume that you can be seen by oncoming motorists. The fact is, that
sometimes they are unable see you. Why? Because motorists coming your way may
be distracted, thus <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">preventing</b> <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">them from</b> <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">being able</b> <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">to see</b> <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">you</b>. </div>

FACT! Drivers on cell phones are distracted, and sometimes
are not aware of pedestrians. Drivers looking in their rear view mirror might

will for sure hinder their ability to see you.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">

Hiking is an exhilarating pastime.
Being out in fresh air of the natural world, observing countless species of
wildlife in the woodlands, and taking in the exquisite scenery of the plant
life’s environment is sensational. <br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
All this is truly magnificent, <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">But First Things First,</b> you must<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span><b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;"><span style="line-height: 115%; mso-bidi-font-size: 18.0pt;">stay safe
while you’re out there.</span></i></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Gearing up for a hike is extremely important. Whether you
are an experienced hiker or a beginner, safety measures should not be taken
lightly. For even the most skilled trekker, an accident can – unfortunately -
happen.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
So here are a few items that you should consider.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Water is of the utmost importance for avoiding dehydration,
and it has the extra benefit of giving you some extra energy. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Having a <a href="http://www.dontgethit.com/whistle.html" target="_blank">whistle </a>on hand is extremely valuable. If you
happen to get lost, and are in need of rescue, a whistle is ideal. It can be
heard from great distances and could make the difference between being rescued
or not. Moreover, if an unexpected storm arises, with a whistle you have a
greater chance of being heard, rather than with your own voice.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>A compass and a pocket knife can be crucial
as well. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Another safety tip is to wear bright, reflective colors.
Light color leggings are a good choice. Not only will this improve your ability
to be seen, but it also helps you notice ticks and other insects. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
A first aid kit should also be on your list of safety
supplies. It may not only for your sake, but for the sake of other hikers as
well.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Being out in the trails sometimes involves greater physical
demands than one may have expected. So having an emergency radio on hand is a
good plan of action.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>A good planned hike
also includes letting others know where you intend to hike, and staying on
marked trails. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
All in all, on any kind of hike, safety is of the highest
priority. Having safety equipment on hand, like whistles, emergency radios,
compasses, maps, and <a href="http://www.dontgethit.com/reflectivegear.html" target="_blank">reflective clothing</a> is the way to go. Be safe, and enjoy
the natural world.</div>

National Safety Council (NSC) says that traffic death rates at night
exceed those during the day by as much as three times. Unfortunately,
many are still in the dark about the hazards of night-time driving. Some
are clueless about ways to properly handle such situations.<br />
<br />
<br />
<img alt="" class="mceWPmore mceItemNoResize" data-mce-src="http://reflectivewear.wordpress.com/wp-includes/js/tinymce/plugins/wordpress/img/trans.gif" src="http://reflectivewear.wordpress.com/wp-includes/js/tinymce/plugins/wordpress/img/trans.gif" title="More..." /><br />
<strong>Tips for Driving Safely At Night</strong><br />
What's
so dangerous about night driving? The darkness, of course. Drivers'
reactions are largely hinged – about 90 percent – on vision, which is
substantially limited in the evening. Once sundown hits, color
recognition, peripheral vision and depth perception get compromised.<br />
It's
even more difficult to see at night if you're an older driver. A
60-year-old driver may require two times more light to be able to see
clearly than someone who just pushed 30.<br />
Traffic mishaps that
prove fatal are often the result of alcohol consumption. Alcohol plays a
part in nearly half of the deaths listed that are related to motor
vehicles use. An even greater number of fatal crashes happen on weekend
evenings than at other times during the week.<br />
Fatigue is yet
another factor that makes night driving more dangerous. If you're
drowsy, your concentration is dulled, which then causes you to react
slower.<br />
The good news is there are several measures you can take
to effectively reduce such after-dark perils. All these have to do with
getting the car ready and following certain guidelines while driving.<br />
<ol start="1">
<li>Prepare
the vehicle for evening drives. Keep tail lights, windows, signal
lights and headlights clean – inside as well as outside.</li>
<li>Never
mix drinking with driving. Alcohol significantly impairs driving
abilities and acts like a depressant. Even a single drink can trigger
fatigue.</li>
<li>When in doubt, turn on the headlights. The lights won't
help make things more visible during early dawn or twilight hours, but
they will go far toward making other drivers see you on the road. It's
just as important to be seen as for you to see.</li>
<li>Avoid
overdriving the headlights. The illuminated area should be enough so
stop there. If you don't you could create a blind crash spot in front of
your car.</li>
<li>When oncoming vehicles fail to reduce the beams from
high down to low, you can avoid the resulting glare by doing this: watch
the road's right edge and use it as guide while steering.</li>
<li>If
car trouble strikes, make sure to pull the vehicle off the road at a
significant distance. It is best to set up <a href="http://www.dontgethit.com/reflective-warning-triangles.html" target="_blank">reflecting triangles</a> close to the car
(about 300 feet at the back) right away to alert approaching traffic of
your situation. Turn both the dome light and blinkers on. If you have any additional flashlights, safety lights, or reflective gear in your car use them. Put on reflective safety vests or apparel for added protection when leaving your vehicle. And put any lights you may have on flashing mode outside your car (or on your hood). Get passengers
out of the car and away from the site and stay off the road.</li>
<li>Headlights
should be aimed correctly. Improperly aimed headlights can blind other
car drivers and limit your ability to visualize the road.</li>
<li>Don't smoke while driving. Night vision is hampered by carbon monoxide and nicotine in cigarette smoke.</li>
<li>Reduce speed and raise the following distances. It's tougher to gauge vehicular speeds as well as distances when the sun is out.</li>
<li> When behind another car, maintain headlights at low beams so the driver ahead isn't blinded by your light.</li>
<li> Stop frequently for exercise and light snacking. If you are tuckered out, take a break and rest for a while.</li>
</ol>
When
the sun sets, it's time to observe some night drive safety measures.
Dusk is one of the toughest times to go driving. Your eyes have to
constantly adapt to the growing darkness so it's definitely a challenge
to keep seeing clearly at night. Take care when driving at sundown. If you have anymore tips please share them with us.<br />

child's first ride to a seasoned racer's training. Did you know,
however, that many states have laws or regulations on the books to
enforce this important form of traffic safety?<br />
<br />
Since cycling is
thought of as recreation, we often don't think of as something regulated
by law. There are laws regarding the use of boats, ATV's and
snowmobiles, though, so why not bicycles?<br />
<img alt="" class="mceWPmore mceItemNoResize" data-mce-src="http://reflectivewear.wordpress.com/wp-includes/js/tinymce/plugins/wordpress/img/trans.gif" src="http://reflectivewear.wordpress.com/wp-includes/js/tinymce/plugins/wordpress/img/trans.gif" title="More..." /><br />
<br />
Here
is a brief overview of some common bicycle regulations. Regulations
vary from area to area, but this will give you a general idea of what is
expected in many localities.<br />
<br />
A <a data-mce-href="http://www.dontgethit.com/0whledbihe.html" href="http://www.dontgethit.com/bihe.html" target="_blank">white front light </a>and
a red reflector on the back of the bicycle are usually required. The
reflector most likely came already attached to your bike. You are
responsible for purchasing and using the light. These safety devices are
required for nighttime bike riding. This is often defined as one
half-hour after sunset to one half-hour before sunrise. It may surprise
you to know that while only four percent of bike riding is done at
night, seventeen percent of crashes involving a vehicle and a bicycle
occur at night. These crashes account for nearly thirty percent of all
bicycle-related fatalities.<br />
<br />
When it comes to safety devices
themselves, follow these guidelines. Make sure that your front light is
visible from at least five hundred feet in front of you. Your rear
reflector has to be visible from five hundred feet as well. You can also
install a <a data-mce-href="http://www.dontgethit.com/5ledbitawisi.html" href="http://www.dontgethit.com/bitali.html" target="_blank">flashing red or amber-colored light </a>on
the back, but it cannot replace your reflector. This is very important,
since if a car doesn't have it's headlights on, the driver can't
possibly see your reflector.<br />
<br />
Consider wearing a reflective vest.
You can also add reflective tape (specially made for this purpose) on
your helmet, your shoes, or your bike itself. Wearing light-colored
clothing also adds to your visibility.<br />
While your front light must
be visible from five hundred feet, make sure it's also bright enough to
allow you to see thirty-five to fifty feet ahead of you. This is the
amount of time needed to stop safely while traveling at fifteen mph.
Adjust this for conditions like rain or fog.<br />
<br />
Simple steps like
these can save a great deal of heartache, and you'll enjoy a more
relaxed biking experience while knowing that you're as safe as possible.<div class="blogger-post-footer"><script src="http://connect.facebook.net/en_US/all.js#xfbml=1"></script><fb:like layout="button_count" show_faces="true" width="75"></fb:like>

In
the case of an emergency, you want the rescue workers, whether they are
police, firefighters or emergency medical technicians, to be able to
reach you quickly. These emergency workers depend on your address's
visibility to assist them at critical times. This problem is compounded
at night. Many homes and apartments have addresses that are hidden, have
numbers missing, or are unlit, making them virtually invisible in the
dark. These simple oversights may cause a tragic delay if an emergency
occurs.<br />
<br />
<img alt="" class="mceWPmore mceItemNoResize" data-mce-src="http://reflectivewear.wordpress.com/wp-includes/js/tinymce/plugins/wordpress/img/trans.gif" src="http://reflectivewear.wordpress.com/wp-includes/js/tinymce/plugins/wordpress/img/trans.gif" title="More..." /><br />
Can
your house numbers be seen from the street? Are they on a background
that provides contrast, such as black numbers on white or light numbers
on a dark background? If your house can not be seen from the street due
to trees or a long driveway, is your address prominently displayed on a
mailbox, painted on a curb, or attached to a fence?<br />
If the answer
to any of these questions is “no,” you're placing yourself and your
family in jeopardy. Thankfully, there are some very simple things you
can do to make sure your home is easy to find in the event of an
emergency.<br />
<br />
First, look at how your address is displayed. It
absolutely must be visible from the street. The general rule is to have
the numbers and letters in your address at least four inches high to
ensure maximum visibility.<br />
When displaying your address, consider
the background. Black metal numbers on a dark house are practically
invisible, even in broad daylight. Make sure to contrast the address
with the background to make it easier to see and read. You can take this
even further by purchasing reflective letters and numbers or lighted
numbers. This gives your address more chance of being seen easily in the
dark. <br />
<br />
If your address is displayed on your mailbox, make
sure it is in good repair. Check regularly to ensure no numbers or
letters have fallen off or faded due to weather.<br />
<br />
Are there trees,
bushes, or shrubs covering your address? Prune them back so the address
can be seen. Make this part of your regular yard maintenance to ensure
the address stays visible.<br />
<br />
One address sign is not enough. Place
one next to the front door, one on either side of your mailbox, one on
the curb (if your area allows this) and one on any prominent yard
decoration such as a lantern.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.dontgethit.com/reflective-address-numbers.html">Reflective numbers</a> are best for
placing on a curbside mailbox or other smooth surface near the street.
Lighted numbers are best to place near your door.<br />
<br />
These quick and simple tasks can ensure that if an emergency occurs, help won't be delayed because of a hidden address Its all about your safety!<div class="blogger-post-footer"><script src="http://connect.facebook.net/en_US/all.js#xfbml=1"></script><fb:like layout="button_count" show_faces="true" width="75"></fb:like>

The
National Safety Council says that night-time traffic mortality rates
are three times as high as those for daytime. Still, many remain in the
dark about the specific hazards tied to night driving. Some just plainly
don't have a clear idea how best to deal with such threats.<br />
<br />
Driving Safe at Night<br />
Why
is it so dangerous to drive at night? The darkness is one obvious
reason. Around 90 percent of drivers' reactions are hinged on vision,
which is severely impaired at night.<img alt="" class="mceWPmore mceItemNoResize" data-mce-src="https://reflectivewear.wordpress.com/wp-includes/js/tinymce/plugins/wordpress/img/trans.gif" src="https://reflectivewear.wordpress.com/wp-includes/js/tinymce/plugins/wordpress/img/trans.gif" title="More..." /> Once
the sun sets, color recognition, peripheral vision and depth perception
become compromised. It is harder for older drivers to see anything at
night. Fifty-year-olds need two times more light than 30-year-olds.<br />
Fatigue
is yet another factor contributing to the dangers of night-time road
cruising. Drowsiness dulls concentration and slows a person's response
times. All these make for a difficult drive. There's also alcohol
that is responsible for nearly half of all fatal vehicular crashes. This
explains why it's riskier to drive on weekend nights. A great number
of automobile mishap-related deaths happen on weekend nights.<br />
The
good news is there are effective ways to reduce after-dark hazards. It starts with proper preparation of the car and heeding certain guidelines when driving.<br />
<br />
Be prepared, check your fluids and make sure all your lights are working correctly. It is important to also keep a flag or <a href="http://www.dontgethit.com/car-emergency-light.html">emergency light </a>in your car to worn drivers of a distressed car. Extra gas in a gas canister is a must.<br />
<br />
When driving follow the steps mentioned below from the
NSC.<br />
1. Headlights aimed properly – Faced the wrong way,
headlights blind other motorists (drivers) and limit ability to view the
roads.<br /> 2. No smoking while driving – The carbon monoxide and nicotine in cigarettes impair vision at night.<br />
3. Lower speeds while increasing the following distance – This helps
plenty in judging how far and fast other vehicles are going at night.<br />
4. Low-beam the headlights – When there's another car in front, avoid
blinding the driver by maintaining headlights at low beams.<br /> 5. Have
periodic breaks while driving – If exhausted from the drive, stop, pick
up some snacks, rest and maybe exercise a bit to re-energize.<br /> 6. Ready the vehicle for evening drives – Keep tail lights, headlights, windows and signal lights clean all around.<br />
7. Drive only when sober – Alcohol seriously hampers driving abilities
and depresses the system. A single drink can trigger fatigue so don't
mix driving with drinking.<br /> 8. When in doubt, turn headlights on –
This is more to help other drivers see you coming than improving your
own vision during the twilight hours. Visibility is very important.<br />
9. Never over-drive headlights – You ought to be able to halt within the
illuminated region. Otherwise, you're likely to create an area in front
of the car for blind crashes.<br /> 10. Avert gaze from oncoming bright
beams – If approaching vehicles don't lower their beams, avoid the glare
and stay on the correct side of the road by focusing on the road's
right edge.<br /> 11. Car trouble? Pull over – If your vehicle acts up,
pull as far off the street as possible. Set up <a href="http://www.dontgethit.com/reflective-warning-triangles.html">reflective triangles</a> near
and 300ft behind the car immediately to warn incoming traffic. Activate
dome lights and flashers, move passengers away and avoid the roadway.<br />
Drive
safe at night by practicing the above safety reminders. Dusk until dawn
is the toughest time for driving. The eyes are busy adapting to the
increasing darkness so exercising care when night driving is always
smart.<div class="blogger-post-footer"><script src="http://connect.facebook.net/en_US/all.js#xfbml=1"></script><fb:like layout="button_count" show_faces="true" width="75"></fb:like>

in unpleasant weather is no picnic, whether it's simply to the grocer's
or across different states. That's why it pays to have a well-prepared
car. Seeing to it that the vehicle is ready for whatever climets show up
and not rushing to get to a destination will ensure that you and your
vehicle arrive safe and in one piece.<br />
Traveling Safe in Winter<br />
<br />
The
AAA and Department of Transportation offer several tips to make winter
travels safer. See to it that the following are taken care of:<img alt="" class="mceWPmore mceItemNoResize" data-mce-src="http://reflectivewear.wordpress.com/wp-includes/js/tinymce/plugins/wordpress/img/trans.gif" src="http://reflectivewear.wordpress.com/wp-includes/js/tinymce/plugins/wordpress/img/trans.gif" title="More..." /><span data-mce-style="text-decoration: underline;" style="text-decoration: underline;"> </span><br />
<br />
<span data-mce-style="text-decoration: underline;" style="text-decoration: underline;">Car Care Essentials:</span><br />
1. Always have the gas tank half-full. This prevents moisture from accumulating and becoming frozen in the gas tubes or lines.<br />
2. Check the battery connections. They have to be clean and secure. Batteries older than three years should be replaced.<br />
3. Make a safety kit for winter. It's a box containing spare batteries;
a <a href="http://www.dontgethit.com/flashlights.html">flashlight</a>; one sleeping bag or blanket; extra hats, rain gear, socks
and <a href="http://www.dontgethit.com/rebe.html">gloves</a>; one sack of non-clumpy kitty litter or sand for traction in
case you are trapped in snow; jumper cables; a big bright-colored cloth
to serve as flag; bottled water; non-perishable foods, one small kit
for tools; and a first-aid kit.<br />
4. Check the car. See that the windshield wiper fluid and anti-freeze are enough.<br />
5. Make sure tires are inflated properly and frequently. Icy
temperatures can cause the tire air pressure to drop, affecting handling
and traction.<br />
6. Clean lights and mirrors. See that the lights are all aimed right.<br />
<br />
<u>Pre-departure reminders:</u><br />
1. See
to it that all roads included in your trip route are open and passable.
The US Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration
website www.fhwa.dot.gov/trafficinfo provides updates to keep you
posted.<br />
2. Warm up the vehicle in open areas. The garage and other enclosed parking places aren't the best for warming up cars.<br />
3. When taking trips or passing through remote locations, inform
friends or family where you plan to be. Let them in on the route to be
taken and estimated arrival time.<br />
<br />
<u>The actual trip heads-up:</u><br />
1. Keep headlights turned on.<br />
2. Raise stopping distances between the vehicle ahead and you.<br />
3. Be on the lookout for drivers who could be having issues with roadway conditions.<br />
4. If feeling uncomfortable about driving, find a secure place and park there for a while.<br />
5. Always buckle up.<br />
6. Slow down, please. Gradual acceleration and deceleration is best. Refrain from frequent use of the cruise control.<br />
7. Never pass other cars on or when close to bridges.<br />
<br />
Keep all these <a data-mce-href="http://www.dontgethit.com/" href="http://www.dontgethit.com/">safety measures </a>and
you're sure to arrive at your destination with everything intact. They
can spell the difference between a great trip and an unfortunate,
regrettable, mishap-ridden outing.<div class="blogger-post-footer"><script src="http://connect.facebook.net/en_US/all.js#xfbml=1"></script><fb:like layout="button_count" show_faces="true" width="75"></fb:like>

<div data-mce-style="text-align: left;" style="text-align: left;">
When
it gets dark, walking and running safely pose a challenge. However,
this doesn't mean people should give up all nightly activity. Thanks to
numerous safety tips out there, it is still possible to go out at night
for a jog or stroll.</div>
<div data-mce-style="text-align: left;" style="text-align: left;">
<span data-mce-style="text-decoration: underline;" style="text-decoration: underline;">How to Have Safe Walks At Night</span></div>
<div data-mce-style="text-align: left;" style="text-align: left;">
Winter
has shorter days. Busy work schedules make it impossible for people to
run, bicycle or walk when it's midday. They're forced to move their
workout routines in the wee morning hours before heading to the office,
or after work, which is sometime in the evening. <img alt="" class="mceWPmore mceItemNoResize" data-mce-src="https://reflectivewear.wordpress.com/wp-includes/js/tinymce/plugins/wordpress/img/trans.gif" src="https://reflectivewear.wordpress.com/wp-includes/js/tinymce/plugins/wordpress/img/trans.gif" title="More..." />In
summer, it's still bright during such hours, but come wintertime, the
days shorten and people have to move their riding or exercise activities
to when it's dark and danger lurks everywhere.</div>
<div data-mce-style="text-align: left;" style="text-align: left;">
If
you are looking for sound advice on how to see and be seen when night
falls, consider the info below. They apply to pedestrians and bicyclists
alike.</div>
<div data-mce-style="text-align: left;" style="text-align: left;">
Seeing
Runners - Bicyclists, walkers and runners need to see as well as be
seen while cloaked in darkness. Having a clear vision of things will
help avoid falling into potholes, tripping over obstacles and other
related road hazards. If you are visible, there's little possibility of
getting hit by drivers.</div>
<div data-mce-style="text-align: left;" style="text-align: left;">
Being
Seen - Bring along flashlights. Go for modern LED or a bright small mag
light / <a href="http://www.dontgethit.com/450-lumen-aluminum-4-mode-led-rechargeable-mini-flashlight.html">mini size light</a>. They're compact while still delivering ample
light. People who can't be bothered with carrying along things can
simply strap on headlamp flashlights.</div>
<div data-mce-style="text-align: left;" style="text-align: left;">
Don
reflective clothes – Stick with lighter shades as darker colors reflect
less light. Even better: use advanced ultra-reflective garb. These
maximize evening visibility.</div>
<div data-mce-style="text-align: left;" style="text-align: left;">
<span data-mce-style="text-decoration: underline;" style="text-decoration: underline;">Several high-technology reflectivity options include:</span></div>
<div data-mce-style="text-align: left;" style="text-align: left;">
1.<a data-mce-href="http://www.brightideasusa.biz/allproducts.html" href="http://www.dontgethit.com/retabyfo.html"> Reflective tape </a>– It reflects light toward the source. Apply generously on exercise outfit. Drivers won't miss such noticeably bright hues.<br />
2. Reflective exercise clothes – Most exercise apparel firms have lines
made from extremely reflective fabrics. They're often marketed as
exercise wear that double as bicycling, walking or other workout
apparel. The clothes are easy to see at night and keep its wearer warm
during winter.<br /> 3. Reflective safety vests – Highway workers wear
similar pieces. People can wear them on top of exercise garb so drivers
see clear human outlines. They can be worn over different exercise
clothing without need for alterations.<br /> 4.<a data-mce-href="http://www.brightideasusa.biz/lights.html" href="http://www.dontgethit.com/bike-lights.html"> LED safety lights </a>– Add this to any of the above options to up visibility.</div>
<div data-mce-style="text-align: left;" style="text-align: left;">
<span data-mce-style="text-decoration: underline;" style="text-decoration: underline;">Other suggestions:</span></div>
<div data-mce-style="text-align: left;" style="text-align: left;">
1. If taking walks with kids after meals, warn them to be careful with traffic.<br />
2. If the community struggles with crime, observe the same vigilance
for after-dark exercise as other night-time activities. Stay away from
dangerous neighborhoods and have companions when running (canine or
human).<br /> 3. Walk or run at tracks or parks nearby to minimize contact with traffic.</div>
<div data-mce-style="text-align: left;" style="text-align: left;">
Taking
self-defense classes is another suggestion. Aside from being a good
source of exercise, it will give those concerned about crime risks more
security. Keep in mind, regular runs or walks mean you're probably in
great shape to chase and outrun criminals. You don't have to abandon all
plans of running, biking and walking just because it's winter. Just
take the necessary precautions and you can continue enjoying your daily
exercise regimens.</div>

be seen by drivers and pedestrian, but is it really as noticeable as a
flashing light? Some people may find the flashing light a little
annoying, but will the single light blend you into a sea of lights.</span></div>

<div>
<span data-mce-style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif;" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif;">The answer is: as annoying as it might be, the <a data-mce-href="http://www.brightideasusa.biz/bihetaco.html" href="http://www.dontgethit.com/bitali.html" title="flashing Light">flashing light</a>
will attract the most attention on a busy city street. European
countries are trying to install flashing brake light on the back of cars
when the vehicle needs to stop quickly while driving 30 mph or more.
This will attract attention to the cars behind it letting them know
there is a short stop coming and danger may occur. Research shows<img alt="" class="mceWPmore mceItemNoResize" data-mce-src="http://reflectivewear.wordpress.com/wp-includes/js/tinymce/plugins/wordpress/img/trans.gif" src="http://reflectivewear.wordpress.com/wp-includes/js/tinymce/plugins/wordpress/img/trans.gif" title="More..." />
that the flashing brake lights allow the driver in back to react and
begin pressing his brake pedal 0.2 seconds faster -- that's about one
car length at 55 mph -- and perhaps soon enough to prevent a rear-end
collision. This proves that the flashing light will attract people’s
attention a lot quicker than the steady light.</span></div>

<span data-mce-style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif;" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif;"><br /> </span></div>
<div>
<span data-mce-style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif;" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif;">However,
if you are riding down a quiet street then the flashing light might not
be necessary since there are not a lot of distractions. </span></div>
<div>
<span data-mce-style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif;" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif;"><br /> </span></div>
<div>
<span data-mce-style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif;" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif;">All in all, if you ride on busy streets the flashing light is your best bet.</span></div>

<a data-mce-href="http://reflectivewear.files.wordpress.com/2010/12/belt-custom-printing.jpg" href="http://reflectivewear.files.wordpress.com/2010/12/belt-custom-printing.jpg"><img alt="Reflective Belt" class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-62" data-mce-src="http://reflectivewear.files.wordpress.com/2010/12/belt-custom-printing.jpg?w=300" height="225" src="http://reflectivewear.files.wordpress.com/2010/12/belt-custom-printing.jpg?w=300" title="Reflective Belt" width="300" /></a>It
is difficult to see one another during the long, cold winter months,
especially in unlit parking lots and dark streets. Fortunately, we have
the <a data-mce-href="http://dontgethit.com/reflectivegear.html" href="http://dontgethit.com/reflectivegear.html" title="Reflective Belt">reflective belt</a>
to increase our visibility to vehicle traffic in these poorly lit
areas. People who work in the street during the dark hours should always
be wearing one of these belts. Even while off duty reflective wear
should always be worn to increase the visibility when walking near
traffic.<br />
Driver visibility is increased significantly when a
pedestrian is wearing a reflective belt. More than once, you have
probably been driving through a parking lot early in the morning and
almost run over a pedestrian not wearing<img alt="" class="mceWPmore mceItemNoResize" data-mce-src="https://reflectivewear.wordpress.com/wp-includes/js/tinymce/plugins/wordpress/img/trans.gif" src="https://reflectivewear.wordpress.com/wp-includes/js/tinymce/plugins/wordpress/img/trans.gif" title="More..." />
their reflective belt. Likewise, under the same conditions, you were
able to see an individual wearing their reflective belt at a safe
distance. Fortunately, the former incident did not end in a minor mishap
or worse.<br />
No one wants to be injured or responsible for injuring
another person, especially in an accident that is preventable. We are
all responsible for taking the necessary safety precautions to prevent
mishaps. This includes wearing required personal protection equipment.<br />
Take note of what is written in the 3rd Wing policy (3 WGI 91-202 paragraph 11) on reflective belt wear:<br />
"Personnel
exposed to vehicle or aircraft traffic during hours of darkness or
periods of reduced visibility will be provided and use reflective
accessories or will use organizational clothing sewn-on reflective tape
(red or orange reflective colors provide better contrast in a snow or
white environment). NOTE: This applies to DoD civilian employees only
while in a paid duty status. Personnel wearing the Air Force PT uniform
either participating in, or traveling to or from fitness activities, are
exempt from wearing the reflective belt. The issued top and bottom
reflective garments must be exposed and not covered by cold weather
gear, back packs, and so forth."<br />
Lastly, you should always give a
friendly reminder to those who are not wearing the required reflective
wear. By doing this you can prevent terrible mishap and accidents.</div>

<a data-mce-href="http://dontgethit.com" href="http://dontgethit.com/" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Yellow Reflector" class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-22" data-mce-src="http://reflectivewear.files.wordpress.com/2010/12/yellow-reflect-w-yellow-webbing.jpg?w=300" height="186" src="http://reflectivewear.files.wordpress.com/2010/12/yellow-reflect-w-yellow-webbing.jpg?w=300" title="Yellow Reflector" width="282" /></a><span data-mce-style="text-decoration: underline;" style="text-decoration: underline;"><span data-mce-style="color: #003300;" style="color: #003300;">Walking Safety Night Visibility</span></span></div>
<div data-mce-style="text-align: left;" style="text-align: left;">
There
is danger in the dark - the biggest being vehicles that don't expect
you or can't see you. Drivers cannot easily see you through fogged
windows and poor weather, and their night vision dims as they age.
Wearing a dark jacket and dark pants, you are as invisible as a ninja
during your early morning or evening walks in the winter darkness. And
what driver thinks anybody insane enough to walk in winter? We need to
walk defensively and take pains to be visible.<img alt="" class="mceWPmore mceItemNoResize" data-mce-src="https://reflectivewear.wordpress.com/wp-includes/js/tinymce/plugins/wordpress/img/trans.gif" src="https://reflectivewear.wordpress.com/wp-includes/js/tinymce/plugins/wordpress/img/trans.gif" title="More..." /></div>
Reflections
on reflectivity: Wearing reflective clothing is a good defense against
invisibility, but you need to be sure that the reflective areas are
large enough and and are exposed from every angle. Do oncoming cars see
you, but not those at side streets? Will that little reflective logo on
your shirt be enough - especially if you hide it under a jacket?<br />
Reflective
Shoes:Most running shoes now have reflective stripes and many tout
their "360 degree reflective" features. A pair of Asics I have even
appear to have reflective soles! If your walking shoes don't have such
features, consider a pair of reflective shoelaces or put some reflective
tape on your shoes.<br />
Reflective Clothing:Your best for finding
reflective clothing is in a running store or a bicycling shop, or the
running and bicycling sections of large sporting goods stores.<br />
Reflective Outerwear: In winter, wearing an extra vest or a reflective jacket can also help keep you warm. DontGetHit.com has reflective vests, belts, stickers, tape, dog collars...<br />
<a data-mce-href="http://dontgethit.com/" href="http://www.dontgethit.com/reve1.html">Reflective Vests</a>,
Wristbands and Hats: In preparation for Portland-to-Coast, I bought
reflective velcro wristbands to wear on wrists and ankles, a reflective
sweatband and a reflective cycling hat. Walking narrow country roads at
night and being passed by 2000 vans of competitors, I didn't want
anybody to miss me, or rather I wanted them to see me and then miss me!
This was in addition to a highly reflective vest and a
lighted/reflective sash!<br />
Tape it Up: The fastest way to become reflective is to buy <a data-mce-href="http://www.brightideasusa.biz/retabyfo.html" href="http://www.dontgethit.com/retabyfo.html">reflective tape</a> and apply it to your favorite walking garments.<br />
